HeartMath In 2004 my friend and spiritual teacher,Mas Rogers, sent me an article about research that was being conducted by the HeartMath Institute into the electro-magnetic field generated by the heart. Mas taught a method of meditation called Heart Radiance and was intensely interested in anything to do with the heart. From Mas' article I learnt that the electro-magnetic field of the heart is 5000 times more powerful than that generated by the brain and that it could be measured a few feet away from the body. I also learnt that the heart contains 40,000 neurons, that is the same cells that exist in the brain, and that it has its own intrinsic nervous system, in effect the heart is a 'mini brain'. |

When I followed up on this excellent and enlightening article I discovered that HeartMath distributed products for measuring heart rate variability and heart/brain coherence. As a meditator and an EFT practitioner I was intrigued by the science and in the possibility of enhancing both my EFT skills and my meditative practices using the HeartMath emwave pc. I purchased an emwave pc and tested it with clients and with myself and was so impressed with the results that I trained to be a licensed HeartMath One on One Provider. This enables me to coach individuals in HeartMath techniques and market their products. Briefly, the emwave works by measuring heart rate variability. We may well think that if a person has a heart rate of 60 beats per second that the heart beats should be 1 second apart. Traditionally the medical profession has thought that this should be the case however, research at HeartMath has shown that increased variability in the heart rate is a good indication of heart/brain coherence. A fixed heart rate is a fair indicator that all is not well and that the person is stressed. The analogy that I use to explain this is that if the heart rate is fixed then this is a fair indicator of rigid thinking, rigid physiology, a rigid constitution and emotional rigidity. If the heart rate has good variability then the person is likely to be flexible in their thinking, physiology, constitution and emotions. This is similar to a tree that grows along the coast. It will be flexible and more able to withstand the harsh conditions of the environment whereas a tree that grows in a protected environment, subject to the same weather conditions, will break and die. In using the emwave pc and later the personal emwave's ability to measure heart coherence, I discovered that I could determine, with the devices, whether I was meditating effectively or not. Further testing also demonstrated that EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) also induced a state of heart coherence. The heart communicates and sometimes overrides commands from the brain, communicating with the brain via the Vagus nerves and the Sympathetic Afferent nerves. When we are engaged with the heart the mind slows down and thoughts become more rational and focussed. We can cultivate heart intelligence with a few simple practices. This cultivation shows the heart's inherent core values in our lives and brings us closer to a sense of security and belonging. Ultimately the head knows and the heart understands. Research suggests that the heart field is not contained just within our bodies but is noticed by those around us. Most of us will have had the experience where we have walked into a room where two people have had an argument. We don't have to be told that there is a problem, we can feel it in our bodies. Similarly if we are in the presence of someone joyful and peaceful we can feel the positive affect of their presence on us. The HeartMath emwave measures Heart Rate Variability (HRV) which is the most dynamic and reflective measure of our inner states. HRV opens a window into the inner workings of the heart and its communication with the brain which in turn affects neurological, biochemical, biophysical and electromagnetic activity. The health implication is that disharmony in heart rhythms lead to inefficiency and increased stress on the heart and other organs. Healthy heart rhythms cause entrainment of the brain to follow resulting in positive health effects. Entrainment is the hearts ability to affect the brain due to its electromagnetic field and the direct nerve connections. The effect of entrainment was discovered by a clock maker, Christiaan Huygens, when he noticed that the pendulum clocks in his studio would all swing together. He deliberately set about swinging the pendulums of his clocks at different times only to find that within a short time all clocks would swing in time with the largest of his pendulum clocks. Heart/Head entrainment occurs at 0.1hrz or 1x cycle each ten seconds. HeartMath techniques and the emwave devices all assist in inducing this condition. This entrainment results in a heightened sense of intuitive clarity and a greater sense of wellbeing. This condition occurs to us naturally when we fall in love, get lost in a beautiful sunset or in listening to inspiring music etc. Physiologically it does not matter if you think you are justified in being angry or not. The body does not discriminate and responds accordingly. The body is not independent of mind and spirit, it is simply a flag waver trying to get your attention whenever you get it wrong. Positive feelings, thoughts, deeds and practices promote good health. Negative feelings, thoughts, deeds and practices on the other hand cause stress, premature ageing and disease. In conclusion positive emotional states create coherence. Try this for yourself: Make yourself comfortable Measure how you feel on a scale of 0-10. (0 is perfectly okay - 10 is the maximum negative emotional intensity that you could feel right now) Breath consciously Imagine the breath entering and leaving the body via the heart Feel appreciation for something or someone that you care about (do this for about 2 minutes or longer) Measure how you feel on a scale of 0-10, as before, and compare the difference Research has shown that exercises such as this can boost the immune system for up to 7 hours. Recalled anger on the other hand compromises the immune system for the same length of time! |
